HAPPY EARTH DAY.
April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. We’re throwing it back to the very first Earth Day, back in 1970. Did you know that “Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, urban dwellers and farmers, business and labor leaders. By the end of 1970, the first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of other first of their kind environmental laws, including the National Environmental Education Act, the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act. Two years later Congress passed the Clean Water Act. A year after that, Congress passed the Endangered Species Act and soon after the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act. These laws have protected millions of men, women and children from disease and death and have protected hundreds of species from extinction.”
We still have a lot of work to do together, but luckily for us, Earth Day is really everyday. Everyday we get to wake up on this beautiful piece of matter, hurling around the sun through space at 67,000 miles per hour. This special little space rock that is the foundation for everything we have in our lives. Let’s acknowledge the amazing resource we as humans have been generously gifted.
Here’s what we’re doing throughout the week to show our appreciation for and celebrate our planet Earth:
Sunday
In honor of Earth Week, we are so proud to be featured among this group of alumni supporting the Harvard Forward movement to establish Harvard University as a leader in the fight against climate change. Check us out here alongside the likes of Al Gore!
Monday
In anticipation of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day coming up, here are 45 things you can do at home to show Mama Nature you care.
Tuesday
Join the Earth Day virtual strike and sign the pledge to vote Earth.
Wednesday
We’re celebrating Earth Day by donating to several organizations that we hold near and dear to our hearts. It’s something we can do easily, and it feels incredible! It’s even more fun if we do it together. We’d love for you to join us in giving.
Thursday
Help Mama Nature by aligning your money with your values. Here’s how to get started.
Friday
Support your local businesses. We’re eating and buying local, especially these days. It’s important to think about the world we want now and in the future. If we don’t want to come out of quarantine with only one huge environment-destroying company left (cough cough Amazon), then it’s up to us to support our local businesses. The super cute website, Family Meal, helps to raise money for NYC restaurants. You can download a beautifully illustrated recipe and make a donation directly to the restaurant’s staff fund.
Saturday
Get outside even if that just means pausing next to an open window, breathe in the fresh spring air, and be grateful for our planet.
You can sign up for our newsletter and follow along on our Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Happy Earth Day friends!
